This week I finally get Nic Dionysopoulos the creator of AkeebaBackup to chat about his world famous backup component for Joomla. We sat down for a quick chat at the Joomla World Conference in Boston in 2013 to talk about how he discovered Joomla and how the need for the backup component came about.

Details for the 2014 JWC have been released. The conference will be held in Cancun, Mexico this year on the 7th - 9th of November 2014.

Interview with Nic Dionysopoulos
Nic started off building websites for clients well before he started working on AkeebaBackup.
The development of it came out of the need and desire to work out issues with his own website deployments from his local environments to production servers or from server to server when migrating.
Nic developed it and showed a few people the extension and over time converted into a working component for Joomla 1.0.
Over the years Nic has designed and built more and more components for Joomla including AdminTools and much more.
Nic has also contributed a lot of code to the Joomla core project. One of his latest contributions that he offered was two factor authentication allowing for more secure logins to your Joomla websites.
We use it on many of our own websites.
Tips and take away points Build extensions that fill a requirement. Akeeba came about because it filled a need that he had, and found that the community needed it as well.
The best extensions are the ones that fill the gaps making your life easier when managing Joomla websites.
Don't copy other people's code. The community will find out.
Lastly, communicate with others. You can learn so much more if you communicate and interact with other people. Join a user group, come along to one of these great Joomla Conferences from around the world.
